Conan McIlwrath: Strengthening Haemophilia Care Through International Collaboration

Conan McIlwrath, Chair of the Board of Directors at The Haemophilia Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“So after a few days in Newcastle it has been a privilege today to represent The Haemophilia Society alongside our CEO, Kate Burt, during our World Federation of Hemophilia or Fédération mondiale de l’hémophilie Twinning visit to Malta.

We were joined by Caesar Garrido from the World Federation of Hemophilia, alongside our friends and twinning partners from the Malta Bleeding Disorders Society, for an important meeting with the Maltese health and deputy prime minister Ian Borg

Our organisations have been twinned for several years, so it was particularly encouraging to arrive in Malta just weeks after emicizumab became available here a significant step forward for people with haemophilia.

But this week has also been about what comes next.

Following our discussions, we leave with commitments to look at the development of comprehensive multidisciplinary care for people with bleeding disorders and to explore tendering options that could improve access to a wider range of treatments.

For me, this demonstrates exactly what the WFH Twinning Programme can achieve. It isn’t about one organisation arriving with all the answers.

It is about patient organisations sharing experience, learning from each other, strengthening their collective voice and using that partnership to help create meaningful change.

Coming from Northern Ireland, I’ve also been struck by the parallels with Malta. Smaller populations bring particular challenges in delivering highly specialised healthcare, but they can also provide opportunities to get the right people around the table and make things happen.

There is more work to do, but Kate and I leave Malta hugely encouraged by what we have seen and heard, and enormously impressed by the determination of our Maltese colleagues.

A huge thank you to everyone who has welcomed us this week, to Caesar and our colleagues at WFH for their continued support, and particularly to our Maltese partners who will continue driving this work forward long after we have gone home.
