Courtney Lawrence: Targeted Donor Screening Reduces Transfusion-Transmitted Babesia Cases

Courtney Lawrence, Divisional Chief Medical Officer at the American Red Cross, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Rebecca Townsend et al, published in Transfusion:

“Interesting overview of 4 cases of transfusion-transmitted babesia, published in AABB Transfusion by the American Red Cross Scientific Office!

Targeted donor laboratory screening in babesia-endemic states has markedly decreased these reported cases.

This shows that informed testing strategies based off pretest probability can be highly effective, but continued transfusion surveillance is necessary to assess for existing gaps and develop potential improvements.

Congratulations to Dr Laura Tonnetti, Rebecca Townsend and Paul Losco!”
