Damilola Olowe: Heavy Periods Aren’t Something to ‘Push Through’

Damilola Olowe, Founder of Menstrual Space with Damilola, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Let’s Talk About Heavy Periods and Iron Deficiency

Today, I had a great session with the girls of Menstrual Space with Damilola on a topic that doesn’t get talked about enough: heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) and its link to iron deficiency anemia.

How do you know if your period is ‘heavy’?

  • Bleeding lasting longer than 7 days
  • Soaking through a pad/tampon every 1–2 hours
  • Needing to change products overnight
  • Passing large clots
  • Bleeding heavy enough to disrupt work, school, or daily life

What can cause it?

Hormonal disorders, thyroid issues, fibroids, uterine growths, cancer, endometriosis, infections like PID (pelvic inflammatory disease), genetic conditions, or certain medications/supplements.

Signs you might also be iron deficient:

Difficulty concentrating or remembering things, fatigue and exhaustion, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, dry/itchy skin, and feeling cold often.

What you can do about it:

  • Get a medical checkup and blood test to find the actual cause
  • Check your iron levels/blood count
  • Talk to a doctor about hormonal treatment or iron supplements if needed
  • Eat iron-rich foods: red meat, liver, fish, leafy greens, kidney beans, spinach, kale, broccoli
  • Manage stress and stay hydrated
  • Maintain a generally healthy lifestyle

Your period isn’t something to just ‘push through.’

If it’s disrupting your life, it’s worth getting checked out.”
