Danielle Boyle: The Person I Was and the Person I Became After My ITP Diagnosis
Danielle Boyle, Founder and CEO of ITP Australia and New Zealand, reposted from ITP Australia and New Zealand on LinkedIn:
”Who I was before my diagnosis is not the same person I became during my ITP storm, and not the same person I am today.
Taking the time to understand those changes, and accepting that I will keep evolving, doesn’t just shape me.
It changes how I see everything.”
Quoting ITP Australia and New Zealand‘s post:
”A diagnosis doesn’t just alter a patient’s medical pathway – it often reshapes their identity.
Before diagnosis, many individuals see themselves as capable, active and independent.
After diagnosis, their identity may shift toward caution, uncertainty and hyper‑awareness of symptoms.
Over time, many develop a new sense of self — one that integrates lived experience, self‑advocacy, resilience and a deeper understanding of their own health.
These identity transitions matter.
They influence engagement, communication, adherence, mental health and the patient–clinician relationship.
A question for those working in haematology, chronic illness care or rare disease support:
‘How do you see identity shift show up in your patients, and how do you support them through it?‘
Your insights can help shape more compassionate, patient‑centred care.”
