It changes how I see everything.”

Before diagnosis, many individuals see themselves as capable, active and independent.

Over time, many develop a new sense of self — one that integrates lived experience, self‑advocacy, resilience and a deeper understanding of their own health.
These identity transitions matter.
They influence engagement, communication, adherence, mental health and the patient–clinician relationship.
