Danison Emmerson, Vascular Neurologist and Codirector of the Stroke and Neurovascular Division at UMass Memorial Medical Center, shared on LinkedIn:
”Stroke care should not depend on ZIP code.
Rural communities carry a disproportionate stroke burden, yet many remain far from timely, specialized stroke care.
The numbers are striking:
- Stroke incidence is 23-30% higher in rural areas than in urban areas.
- Rural counties experience a 30% higher stroke mortality rate than urban counties.
- More than 70% of stroke patients who require transfer wait longer than two hours to reach a higher level of care.
For rural patients, delay is not just a metric.
It is geography, infrastructure, workforce, transfer logistics, and access to expertise.
If we are serious about improving stroke outcomes, rural stroke systems need faster pathways, stronger networks, more reliable transfer processes, and broader access to telestroke and vascular neurology expertise.
Access delayed is treatment denied.”
