David McIntosh: African Healthcare and European Partnerships in Plasma Medicine
David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared European Medicines Agency’s post on LinkedIn, adding:
”This welcome news must surely be a great encouragement to all who are concerned with – or about – African Healthcare matters.
I repost it here mainly for that reason.
However, a cautionary footnote is also advisable.
European Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals are well advanced, of course, and there’s much there from which others can learn, and benefit. There are some aspects of European practice, policy and folklore that are less valuable. Some are positively counter-productive.
Africa will therefore do well to approach all European partnerships with both optimism and caution.
In a specific example – the European approach to plasma-derived medicines is backward and unproductive. It would not be a good rôle model for Africa to follow.
The Continent of Europe is heavily dependent on US plasma to meet the needs of European patients.
European countries following the ‘party line’ on plasma collection/donation are all failing to meet their own patients’ needs.
None are generating any surplus to export for the benefit of others.
In the plasma medicines field, Africa should beware of Europeans bearing gifts.”
