David McIntosh: Plasma Therapies and the Unfinished Global Access Mission

David McIntosh, Founder and Chair at United Plasma Action, shared Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association’s post on LinkedIn:

“Again this year, International Plasma Awareness Week will raise the profile of plasma-derived medicines – those vital treatments that are saving lives and improving conditions for rare disease sufferers all over the World.

Quite rightly too – of course…

However, in commending this PPTA post to fellow LinkedIners, I’d also like to mention the other side of this bright coin:

An estimated 80 percent of the rare disease patients and undiagnosed sufferers out there, globally, do NOT currently have access to these life-saving treatments.

The international efforts of the Plasma Industry, the Not-for-profit Sector, the WHO, the EU, National Governments, Professional bodies, Patient Representatives and others, over the last 50 years have brought us to a situation in which less than one quarter of our mission has been accomplished.

The consequent suffering and mortality is as shameful as it is shocking.

As IPAW ’26 approaches, it surely behaves us all to reflect upon these things – not on behalf of the happy few that already benefit from our efforts – but on behalf of the vast majority of sufferers, who don’t.

Perhaps IPAW ’26 can herald in a new era of consciousness of their situation – and a new determination to change it for the better.

Yes…?”

Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Just 3 weeks away!

International Plasma Awareness Week is almost here.

From October 5–9, 2026, communities around the world will come together to celebrate the generosity of plasma donors and raise awareness of the life-changing impact of plasma donation.

Be part of the movement!

Get involved by visiting plasmaweek.org.”
