Deva Nanda TK: A Practical Overview of Dural Sinuses and The Venous Drainage of the Brain
Deva Nanda TK, Doctor of Medicine at Tashkent State Medical University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”The Dural Venous Sinuses: The ‘Brain’s Drainage’
The Hook: ‘The Veins That Never Collapse.’
The Anatomy: These aren’t your typical veins with thin walls and valves. They are channels formed between the layers of the brain’s tough outer covering (the Dura Mater). Because they are encased in “leather,” they stay open even under pressure.
The ‘Cheat Sheet’ (The Major Players):
- Superior Sagittal Sinus: Runs right down the midline of the skull.
- Transverse Sinuses: Run laterally along the back of the head.
- Sigmoid Sinuses: The ‘S-shaped’ curves that exit the skull to become the Internal Jugular Veins.
Clinical Pearl: Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis. A severe infection in the ‘Danger Triangle’ of the face (nose/upper lip) can travel backward into these sinuses, potentially leading to life-threatening blood clots in the brain.”
