Hassan Alshehri: Managing Hepatic Vein Thrombosis with Life-Saving DIPS in Saudi Arabia
Hassan Alshehri, President of Saudi Interventional Radiology Society, shared on LinkedIn:
”A21-year-old gentleman presented with hematemesis – a critical and life-threatening scenario.
Imaging confirmed Budd-Chiari syndrome with complete hepatic vein thrombosis, leaving very limited conventional options.
A Direct Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (DIPS) was successfully performed, creating a shunt between the portal vein and the IVC – effectively bypassing the occluded hepatic veins and relieving portal hypertension.
Post-DIPS, residual gastric varices were identified and successfully embolized using glue, achieving full control of the bleeding.
What makes this case truly special is the leading role of our fellows.
The procedure was largely driven by Dr. Ali Alghamdi and Bashar Babkour demonstrating exceptional skill, confidence, and clinical judgment.
This reflects the true strength of Interventional Radiology training in Saudi Arabia:
- Empowering fellows with real procedural ownership
- Building high-level technical and decision-making skills
- Delivering advanced, life-saving care through a strong training culture
Proud of this team and what it represents for the future of IR.”
