Jessica Garcia, Pediatric Hematologist, Hemostasis and Thrombosis Specialist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Being on Åland Island for the 100‑year VWD anniversary felt incredibly special.
Standing where VWD was first recognized, where Hjördis lived and where her story began, made the science feel personal. Visiting her childhood home was surreal.
As a fellow in Milwaukee working in the VWF biology lab under Drs. Bob Montgomery and Veronica Flood, I spent years reading papers written by the very giants I met there.
I felt like a little girl at Disney World, finally seeing her heroes, except mine were the world’s leading VWD experts gathered on the island where it all started.
I am so grateful to have been part of this experience.”
