Protein C, protein S, and antithrombin deficiencies are rare inherited thrombophilias that can increase the risk of blood clots. These proteins are part of your body’s natural ‘brake system’ for clotting when one is deficient or isn’t working as it should, that balance can shift toward clot formation.
Because these deficiencies may not cause symptoms on their own, some people don’t learn they have one until after experiencing a blood clot or undergoing testing because of a family history.
