M Velia Antonini: ECMO Cannula Design and Its Impact on Blood Flow, Thrombosis and Hemolysis
M Velia Antonini, Hematologist, Perfusionist ECMO and NRP Specialist and Chair of the Normothermic Regional Perfusion EuroELSO Working Group, shared a post on X:
“Cannulas are direct or indispensable interface between patients and ECMO but may also cause severe side effects, as thrombosis and hemolysis!
Simulation study evaluating impact of drainage cannulas design current design reveals no flow or stagnation areas, which may induce thrombosis, especially if EBF low 2LPM largest proportion of flow drains through proximal row of holes is a risk area for hemostasis distal new geometric design improved pressure loss, but at the expense of pronounced distal no flow zones geometry of side holes has an important impact: distal growth of hole area results improved flow.”
