Overwhelmed? A Leader’s Guide from Mark Crowther to Getting Back on Track
Mark Crowther, Distinguished University Professor and Chair, Department of Medicine at McMaster University, shared on LinkedIn:
”Even the most efficient leaders can sometimes feel overwhelmed.
A full inbox, overlapping deadlines, and high-stakes decisions can converge all at once—and suddenly, it feels like you’re digging out from under an avalanche.
In moments like these, long-term strategies won’t help.
What does help is stepping back—sometimes literally.
A quiet walk, a change of scenery, or time with a pet can ground you and clear your head just enough to find your footing again. (Dogs are excellent at reminding us what really matters.)
From there, it’s about triage:
- Focus on one urgent task at a time
- Finish the small things cluttering your mental space
- Defer what can wait—even if that means adjusting a deadline
- Protect time in your schedule, even if it means pausing new priorities
Just as important: don’t try to carry it all alone.
- Delegate thoughtfully
- Treat deferring to others as a leadership opportunity
- Make time for mentorship—it builds long-term capacity and strengthens your team
Above all, keep your eyes on the horizon. Everyone falls behind. What matters is how we return—steadier, clearer, and more intentional.
