Mary Maina: Postpartum Hemorrhage Is Preventable and Treatable
Mary Maina, Co-Convener at Intercounty MPDSR Initiative, County Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Kiambu County Government, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Postpartum Hemorrhage is preventable.
Postpartum Hemorrhage is treatable.
At the beginning of the year, the leadership of the department of health committed to support facilities to end deaths from postpartum hemorrhage in the county:
- Availability of blood and blood products through regular, county supported blood drives.
- Availability of uterotonics including heat stable carbetocin, oxytocin and Tranexamic acid in ALL public facilities offering maternity services at All Times.
- Capacity building through regular drills by the EmONC mentors available in the county.
- Monthly MPDSR supportive supervision.
- All level 4 and 5 facilities are supported to stop hemorrhage before referral. Specialist Obstetricians were posted to each and every level 4 hospital to support this, for the woman who needs surgical intervention.
- Blood moves to the patient, not the patient to blood since January 2026.
- Level 3 facilities supported through mentorships and regular reminders to Refer in Good time.
- Dedicated Ambulance for maternal and newborn referrals. More efforts still going into improving the TAT for referrals.
- Fidelity to the Golden Hour of PPH. Regular remimders in the whatsapp groups to Act Fast, Refer Early.
While there is still alot to be done, this is an unprecedented record. And it didnt happen by chance. The healthworkers and the leadeship have demonstrated Deliberate efforts to keep mothers and newborns alive.
(We lost one to Antepartum hemorrhage (APH) at 29 weeks of pregnancy. Her loss will not be in vain, and tge lessons learnt will save those we can).
