“Day 15 | Thrombocytopenia
Thrombocytopenia is a condition characterized by a platelet count below 150,000/µL, leading to an increased risk of bleeding.
Since platelets are essential for clot formation, a decrease in their number can result in prolonged bleeding and spontaneous hemorrhage.
Common Signs and Symptoms:
- Petechiae
- Purpura
- Gum and nose bleeding
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Hematuria and melena
- Prolonged bleeding after injury
Nursing Priorities:
- Monitor for bleeding
- Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs
- Use electric razors instead of blades
- Minimize unnecessary needle sticks
- Educate patients on injury prevention
Key Point:
Low platelets equals high bleeding risk.”
