Moustafa Abdou: Tumor Lysis Syndrome Is a Preventable but Life-Threatening Oncologic Emergency

Moustafa Abdou, Author and Founder of AskHematologist.com, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS): Preventable, Yet Potentially Fatal

Tumor Lysis Syndrome remains one of the most critical oncologic emergencies in clinical practice. Rapid tumor cell breakdown can lead to severe metabolic disturbances, including hyperkalemia, hyperuricemia, and acute kidney injury, with potentially life-threatening consequences.

Importantly, TLS is no longer confined to high-grade lymphomas and acute leukemias. With the increasing use of targeted therapies, it is now recognized across a broader spectrum of malignancies.

Early risk stratification, close monitoring, and timely intervention, including hydration and appropriate use of agents such as rasburicase, are essential to improving patient outcomes.”
