Moyahabo Julius Rampya: Shaping the Future of Stroke Care in Africa
Moyahabo Julius Rampya, Associate Lecturer (Teaching and Learning Coordinator) and Non-Medical Human Research Ethics Committee at University of the Witwatersrand, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Grateful to have been invited to the World Stroke Summit in Johannesburg, bringing together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, stroke support organisations and people with lived experience of stroke for two days of discussion on the future of stroke care in Africa.
Lived experience was embedded throughout the programme, with people affected by stroke contributing directly to conversations about advocacy, services and policy.
It was a powerful reminder that people affected by stroke should not simply be recipients of the systems we build, but active participants in shaping them.
The Summit also came at an important moment for global stroke advocacy, following the adoption of the first-ever World Health Assembly resolution dedicated entirely to stroke earlier this year.
Discussions moved from global policy to what implementation could look like in practice, including Prof. Jeyaraj Pandian’s reflections on models for stroke advocacy and Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi’s perspective on South Africa’s response to non-communicable diseases.
It was great to connect with stroke support organisations from across Africa, spend time with Sarah Belson and colleagues from the World Stroke Organization community and reconnect with Dr. Jeneral Dumura Alfin.
I leave the Summit with an even greater appreciation of how clinical care, advocacy, policy and lived experience need to come together if we are to build stroke systems that work for the people they are intended to serve.”
