Muhammad Sufyan: Deep Vein Thrombosis – Recognizing the Warning Signs

Muhammad Sufyan, Student at University of Okara, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“DVT – Deep Vein Thrombosis – a blood clot in a deep vein, most often in the calf, thigh, or pelvis.

Watch for these symptoms, usually in one leg:

  • Swelling that doesn’t go down overnight
  • Pain or tenderness – feels like a cramp or ‘pulled muscle’ but won’t ease with stretching
  • Warmth and redness over the area
  • Veins look more prominent than the other leg
  • About 50% of people have no obvious symptoms though, so it’s often found after complications.

Main risk factors:

  • Immobility: Long flights, bed rest, surgery, plaster casts
  • Medical: Cancer, heart failure, inflammatory diseases, prior DVT/PE
  • Lifestyle: Smoking, obesity, dehydration
  • Hormonal: Pregnancy, postpartum, estrogen birth control/HRT
  • Genetic: Clotting disorders like Factor V Leiden

Lab side – what techs see:

D-dimer blood test is often ordered first.High D-dimer and symptoms means doctor orders a Doppler ultrasound to confirm. As a Lab Technologist you’d run coagulation panels, D-dimer, PT/INR, aPTT for monitoring.”
