Nuuman M. Kinyasi: Hemophilia Care in Tanzania – Bridging the Gap with Global Progress

Nuuman M. Kinyasi, Secretary of Dar es Salaam and Coastal Zone at Hemophilia Society of Tanzania, shared on LinkedIn:

”Hemophilia Care in Tanzania: Bridging the Gap with Global Progress

Globally, hemophilia care is entering a new era with non-factor therapies, gene therapy, and extended half-life products, while prophylaxis is now widely adopted as standard care in high-income settings.

In Tanzania, however, significant structural challenges remain:

  • Delayed or missed diagnosis due to limited awareness and diagnostic capacity
  • Inconsistent availability of clotting factor concentrates
  • Heavy dependency on donated products, creating unpredictability in access
  • Limited access to prophylaxis
  • Weak national registry and surveillance systems

This contrast highlights a critical reality: global innovation is advancing faster than health system readiness in many low-resource settings.

There is an urgent need to strengthen national rare disease strategies, improve diagnostic systems, and ensure sustainable access to treatment.

The gap is not in science – it is in access and health system readiness.

Equity in hemophilia care must be integrated into broader national chronic disease priorities.”
