Peter Zhang: Is Canada Ready for the Gene Therapy Era?

Peter Zhang, Director, Business Acceleration at Odaia, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”My latest in The Hill Times on gene therapies, and whether the Canadian healthcare system is ready for these innovative medicines.

When I was a board member with Hemophilia Ontario (now known as Bleeding Disorders Ontario), I was excited to hear about its patient impact firsthand.

This year, a Canadian with severe hemophilia B received the first gene therapy approved in Canada. But a single dose can cost more than $4 million, and payers need to approach patient access in an equitable and sustainable manner.

Canada also needs to consider its strategy for future innovations in gene therapy and it’s encouraging that there is ongoing work to leverage this technology to introduce therapies for patients living with Huntington’s disease, spinal muscular atrophy, and inherited retinal diseases.”
