Phil Spinella: Blood is for Bleeding, Salt Water is for Cooking pasta, Keeping It Simple

Phil Spinella, Co-Director, Trauma and Transfusion Medicine Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh, shared JAMA Surgery‘s post on LinkedIn:

“Blood is for Bleeding. Salt water is for cooking pasta. Keeping it simple …..

The title says hemorrhagic shock. Thats the population being discussed not minor or even moderate bleeding.”

JAMA Surgery shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Julia R. Coleman et al., adding:

“Viewpoint: In hemorrhagic shock, large-volume crystalloid administration may worsen dilutional coagulopathy, hypothermia, metabolic acidosis, and other physiologic disturbances, while blood-based resuscitation aligns more closely with contemporary damage control principles.

The Viewpoint indicates that future evidence reviews should better account for pragmatic trauma trial design, transfer status, transport time, and patient selection when assessing prehospital blood transfusion.”
