Pinar Demirtepe: Not All “Blood Thinners” Are the Same

Pinar Demirtepe, Intensive Care Nurse at Ministry of Health of the Republic of Türkiye, shared a post on LInkedIn:

“One of the things I learned after starting to work in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit surprised me.

Many people, including healthcare professionals early in their careers, use the term ‘blood thinner’ for different medications. However, anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs are not the same.

Anticoagulants mainly target the coagulation cascade and help prevent fibrin-rich clots, while antiplatelet drugs reduce platelet aggregation and are particularly important in arterial thrombosis, such as coronary artery disease.

Understanding the mechanism behind these medications is far more valuable than simply memorizing their names.

Every day in critical care reminds me how much there is still to learn—and that’s one of the things I enjoy most about this profession.”
