Rachel Keane: Summer Clinical Research at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore

Rachel Keane, Member-At-Large (Governance and Standards Officer) at Phi Sigma Sigma, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“As I head into my junior year at the University of Maryland, I want to reflect on the incredible experience I had this summer, returning as a full-time research assistant at the Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, part of Life Bridge Health.

In my new role, I had the opportunity to work on a new study from start to finish.

During this time, I learned all that goes into a clinical research study outside of the drug or device being trialed.

I worked alongside those in our lab to recruit, screen, and schedule participants, and I also worked closely with representatives outside of LifeBridge.

Most impactfully, I was able to screen and enroll patients myself, which allowed me to interact with them in a way that I hadn’t before.

Beyond that, I strengthened my technical skills, analyzing data in REDCap, MedCalc, and Excel.

I enjoyed learning about how much goes into a study before the data collection even begins, and how much of clinical research is about the people in it: the patients, the coordinators, the clinicians all working toward the same outcome – to advance thrombosis research.

Once again, I want to extend my gratitude to Kevin Bliden for his mentorship and guidance throughout the past two summers, as well as Dr. Udaya Tantry for patiently teaching me the intricacies of working with advanced lab equipment.

This experience has undoubtedly strengthened my commitment to medicine, and I will use all that I have learned in my future as a physician.”
