Rob Maloney: Camp and the Power of Possibility for Children with Bleeding Disorders

Rob Maloney, Chief Executive Officer of Hemophilia of Georgia, shared on LinkedIn:

“People hear about our camp and naturally think of activities.

The ropes course and horses.

The lake.

Arts and crafts.

We’ve got it all and kids love it.

But camp is doing something deeper than that. It’s repairing imagination.

A child with a bleeding disorder can absorb a lot without anyone ever meaning to send the message.

Be careful.

Sit this one out.

Maybe not for you.

Let’s not risk it.

Ask first.

Some of that caution is necessary.

Some of it comes from love.

But over time, a child can start to imagine a smaller life than the one they are actually capable of living.

Then camp happens. They see older kids who look confident.

They see counselors who understand. They try something they didn’t think they could do.

They realize they are not the only one.

And suddenly their future gets larger.

Camp matters for a bunch of reasons.

But this one can’t be overlooked!

Of course it’s a break from routine and a respite for parents.

Of course there’s lots of education.

But it’s also a place where kids begin to revise the story they are telling themselves about what is possible.

That kind of change is hard to measure.

But it is real and it’s happening.”
