Rohit Sankar J. Snscphysio: Recognizing the Clot Before It Becomes Life-Threatening
Rohit Sankar J. Snscphysio, Physiotherapy Student at SNS Institutions, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, commonly in the legs, causing symptoms like swelling, pain, warmth, and redness.
It requires prompt treatment to prevent the clot from traveling to the lungs, which causes a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE).
Key Aspects of Deep Vein Thrombosis:
Symptoms:
Swelling, pain, tenderness, or red/warm skin in the affected leg or arm, though some cases show no symptoms.
Causes/Risk Factors:
Prolonged immobility (bed rest, long-distance travel), surgery, injuries, obesity, pregnancy, and smoking can increase risk.
Pulmonary Embolism (PE):
This occurs if the clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, causing symptoms like sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up blood.
Diagnosis:
Doctors typically use a venous duplex ultrasound to visualize blood flow and detect clots.
Treatment:
Primary treatments include anticoagulants (blood thinners) to prevent the clot from growing and new clots from forming.
Prevention:
Maintain mobility, stay active, maintain a healthy weight, and use compression stockings if recommended.”
