Shamala Thilarajah: Our Team Receives the NMRC Transition Award for NEUROACT-Stroke

Shamala Thilarajah, Associate Professor at Singapore Institute of Technology, shared on LinkedIn:

”I am so excited to share that our team has been awarded the NMRC Transition Award for NEUROACT-Stroke.

A Phase I/IIa early-phase rehabilitation trial asking a simple but important question: What is the right dose of aerobic exercise to support recovery after stroke?

While dose-finding approaches are routine in drug development, they remain relatively uncommon in rehabilitation research.

NEUROACT will combine:

  • Clinical recovery outcomes
  • Safety and tolerability data
  • Multimodal biomarkers linked to neurorecovery
  • Early-phase dose articulation methods

Importantly, the study will include stroke survivors often underrepresented in rehabilitation trials.

Very grateful for the guidance of my mentors Yong Hao Pua and Deidre De Silva.

I hope to pay this forward in the years ahead.

A special thank you to Li Khim Kwah – winning our first grant together in 2020 was a breakthrough moment that laid the foundation for this research programme.

Very fortunate to be working alongside an incredible international multidisciplinary team and lived experience partners – Leonid Churilov, Sandra A Billinger, Yee Sien Ng, Prof Tan Eng King, Prof Lo Yew Long, Kate Hayward, Torsten Rackoll, Michael Nilsson, Bibhas Chakraborty, PhD, Cindy L W Ng, Ping Liao, Joyce Lui, Wendy Leaw, Jason Ong and Prakasham Thangavelu.

Looking forward to building precise, biologically informed and inclusive approaches to stroke rehabilitation.”
