Sharmila Manian: Why Color-Coding is a Lifesaver in Patient Blood Management
Sharmila Manian, Transfusion Medicine Specialist at Hospital Sultan Ismail, shared a post on Linkedin:
“Why Color-Coding is a Lifesaver in Patient Blood Management (PBM).
In the fast-paced environment of a hospital, clarity saves lives.
Patient Blood Management isn’t just about ‘giving blood’ – it’s a sophisticated, multidisciplinary approach to managing a patient’s own blood as a vital resource.
To make these complex decisions safer and faster, we rely on a universal language: Color
From the bedside to the laboratory, here is how the PBM ‘Color Code’ works:
The Traffic Light System:
Clinical triggers (like Hemoglobin levels) are categorized into Red, Yellow, and Green zones.
This ensures that transfusions are only given when truly necessary, following a restrictive, evidence-based strategy.
The Lab Standard:
Ever wonder why tube caps are specific colors?
Pink for cross-matching, Purple for FBC, Gold for Iron studies.
This standardization is our first line of defense against ‘Wrong Blood in Tube’ (WBIT) errors.
The Three Pillars:
PBM is built on optimizing red cell production (Pillar 1), minimizing blood loss (Pillar 2), and managing anemia tolerance (Pillar 3).
The Bottom Line:
Better PBM means fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and better stewardship of our precious donor supply.
Standardizing our visual cues is a simple yet powerful way to improve patient safety.
How does your facility implement PBM protocols?”
