Tarik Elagha: Should You Have Lp(a) Checked?
Tarik Elagha, Marketing and Digital Transformation Manager at Wahat Al Shifa Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Most people think a normal cholesterol test means their heart is safe.
But cardiologists are increasingly talking about a different blood test that many people have never heard of.
It is called Lipoprotein(a) — or Lp(a).
And it can reveal a hidden risk for heart disease that a standard cholesterol test does not detect.
What makes it different?
Lp(a) is mostly determined by genetics.
That means someone can eat well, exercise regularly, and still have high levels without knowing it.
Studies show that about 1 in 5 people have elevated Lp(a).
Many of them discover it only after a heart attack or stroke occurs in the family.
Because of this, many cardiology experts now suggest that adults check Lp(a) at least once in their lifetime.
The test is simple.
Just a routine blood sample.
But the information it provides can help doctors better understand cardiovascular risk and guide prevention strategies earlier.
Sometimes the most important health information comes from the tests we never knew existed.
Awareness is often the first step in protecting the heart.”
