Tosin Ola: A New Era in Sickle Cell Disease Treatment and the Question of Access
Tosin Ola, Founder and CEO at Purple Serenity Company, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Amazing news and a milestone worth pausing on.
Aisha has become the first patient in the UK to complete gene-editing therapy for sickle cell disease — and is now living without sickle cell crises.
Before treatment, she was in emergency care as often as every two weeks. Her stem cells were edited and returned to her, and her life looks completely different now.
I’m happy for you Aisha.
As a nurse and advocate, I keep coming back to the same question: these therapies exist — so who gets them, where, and how quickly? Why are the success stories so few when millions of warriors globally have sickle cell?
What is causing the barrier to care?
For patients and families still waiting, stories like this are not just hope. They are a reminder of what equitable access could change.
Let’s talk about it: If gene therapy became available to you or a loved one tomorrow, what would you want to know first?”
