“Beyond Oncology: Demystifying the Expanding Immunotherapy Arsenal (Introductory Post)
When we hear ‘immunotherapy,’ we often think of cancer. But harnessing and modulating the human immune system is transforming medicine far beyond oncology from rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis to asthma, severe allergies, and rare autoimmune conditions.
Today, ‘Immunotherapy’ spans a massive range of targeted biological approaches designed to activate, train, or suppress immune responses.
Here is the breakdown of the major therapeutic modalities shaping modern healthcare:
- Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICIs): Releasing T cell ‘brakes’ in oncology, while checkpoint agonists emerge to quiet autoimmune disease.
- CAR T and Cell Therapies: Reprogramming immune cells to destroy malignant cells in cancer and now resetting the immune system in severe lupus and autoimmune diseases.
- Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs): Delivering targeted payloads in oncology, with expanding applications in localized inflammation.
- Bispecific Antibodies & BiTEs: Molecular matchmakers connecting immune cells to targets in both oncology and non oncology (e.g., hemophilia, eye diseases).
- Targeted Monoclonal Antibodies: Blockbusters neutralizing cytokines, receptors, or cell markers in autoimmune, allergic, and infectious conditions.
