Wolfgang Miesbach: The Growing Impact of Age-Related Disease in Hemophilia
Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared post on LinkedIn:
“Crucial real-world data on our aging haemophilia population!
As life expectancy improves, our patients face new clinical challenges.
A massive Emory University analysis of US Medicare claims (2000-2020) looking at 2,058 adults (avg age 57.2; 1,735 Hem A or 323 Hem B) reveals critical shifts:
- Surging Comorbidities: Rates of arthropathy (the highest burden by far), liver disease, CVD, and renal disease are substantially higher in haemophilia patients vs. the matched US population.
- Elevated Mortality: Males with haemophilia face a 12% higher mortality rate (aHR is equal to 1.12) vs. the general public. (No significant difference in females: aHR is equal to 0.96).
- The Multiplier Effect: Having common chronic diseases (Cancer, COPD, CHF, CVD, Diabetes) drives a massive 67–300% increase in mortality rates for these patients.
We are managing the first true cohort of aging haemophilia patients. This data screams for a shift toward proactive, multidisciplinary prevention to tackle age-related chronic diseases alongside core bleeding risks.
Kudos to Stacey Fedewa, Christine Kempton, MD, MSc, and the Emory, Hemophilia of Georgia team for this excellent work!”
