Zahra Ghasemi: How a Strategic Plasma Model Transformed Hemophilia Care
Zahra Ghasemi, Pharmacoeconomist, Member of Health Technology Assessment international and Cochrane, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Iranian Journal of Blood and Cancer, adding:
”On 17th April, this World Hemophilia Day, we celebrate a triumph of science: in the early 1900s, a child born with hemophilia faced a life expectancy of just 13 years.
Today, that gift of life has reached 77 years.
This 64-year gain is the true ‘yield’ of professional and scientific dedication.
Having invested 6 years in the plasma-derived medicinal products industry, I am particularly proud to highlight the efficiency of Iran’s national plasma contract fractionation model, which has been recognized for many years by the World Health Organization as a role model for countries seeking to improve access to essential medicines.
In our published study in 2024, we analyzed how this strategic framework, bolstered by an 18.9% annual growth in plasma collection as the raw material for the manufacturing of vital medicines, has transformed care for hemophilia patients.
This resilient infrastructure now supports 5,500 patients with Factor VIII deficiency and 1,200 patients with Factor IX deficiency by covering 100% of needs through domestic production of our own ‘liquid gold,’ local Iranian plasma.
While the science is found in fractionation yields and HEOR modeling, the heart of this industry lies in the altruism of donors who have helped extend life expectancy from just 13 years to 77 years, ensuring that every patient has the chance to enjoy an extended lifespan.”
