Elisha Harris on Australia’s Plasma Crisis: “Only 1 in 30 Donate” When 1 in 3 Will Need It
Elisha Harris, Business Manager at Medicross Care, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Giving Blood
Today was my first donation in a long time, and it reminded me exactly why this matters so much. For me, donating isn’t just a good deed — it’s a way to give back to those in need and support people who rely on lifesaving treatments every single day.

What many don’t realise is that Australia is currently facing a significant plasma shortage, and we’re having to import plasma products from overseas just to meet demand.
A few eye-opening facts:
- 1 in 3 Australians will need blood or blood products in their lifetime.
- Only 1 in 30 donate.
- Plasma is used in treatments for cancer, immune disorders, trauma, burns and rare diseases.
- Demand for plasma has grown by over 10% each year, and Australia can’t keep up without imports.
Getting back in the chair today reminded me how simple the process is — and how powerful the impact can be.
If you’ve ever considered donating — or haven’t been in a while — this is your sign.
Your donation could save a life, change a family’s story, or help someone through the toughest moment of theirs.
Book a donation at Lifeblood and make a real impact.
(Shoutout to the team at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Robina)”
