Marilena Vrana Urges EU Policymakers to “Keep Patients at the Centre” of Critical Medicines Act
Marilena Vrana, Vice President at the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA) Europe, shared on LinkedIn:
“Yesterday’s vote in the European Parliament marks an important shift in how Europe prepares for and protects access to critical medicines. The SANT Committee’s decision to refine the scope of the Critical Medicines Act (CMA), by recognising the distinct characteristics of different pharmaceutical supply chains, is a welcome move.
For the CMA to reach its full potential and properly safeguard patients, it needs to account for how medicines are actually developed and manufactured. Plasma-derived medicines, which rely on voluntary donations and complex production processes, demonstrate why tailored policy solutions and regulatory flexibility are essential.
As the trilogues will begin in the new year, I look forward to Council of the European Union and European Commission to align with the EP’s position on this matter.
I also urge policymakers to keep patients at the centre of their thinking during these negotiations. Access and availability of medicines must be prioritised. Unilateral and uncoordinated national stockpiling can have unwanted consequences on PDMP supply, which is why PPTA Europe recommends avoiding national stockpiling and limiting EU-level stockpiling to clearly defined crisis situations.
