Von Willebrand Disease Is the Most Common Inherited Bleeding Disorder in the World. In Young Children With Severe Disease, Prophylactic Treatment Has Lacked Any FDA-Approved Option Until Now

On July 2, 2026, the FDA expanded Wilate (von Willebrand Factor/Coagulation Factor VIII Complex Human, Octapharma) approval to include routine prophylaxis in children younger than 6 years with von Willebrand disease, making it the first and only VWF concentrate approved for prophylaxis across all ages and all VWD types.

The Phase 3 WIL-33 trial (NCT04953884; n equals 12; median age 2.0 years; severe VWD) showed a mean total ABR of 4.6 (SD 6.1) during 12 months of prophylaxis; spontaneous ABR 0.9; 98.2% of all bleeds were minor; 95.6% of treated bleeds required only 1 infusion.

This was the first dedicated prospective clinical trial of VWF prophylaxis in children under 6 worldwide.
