Dušan Ušjak: A Month of Research and Scientific Collaboration

Dušan Ušjak, Postdoctoral Research Associate at IMGGE, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“October 2026 was a particularly active month, bringing several opportunities to share our research, exchange knowledge, and learn from experts in hematology and biotechnology.

On World Thrombosis Day (October 13), our Molecular Biology of Hemostasis Group at the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGE), University of Belgrade, hosted an accredited continuing medical education course, welcoming physicians and other healthcare professionals from across Serbia.

I had the pleasure of delivering a lecture entitled ‘von Willebrand factor and factor VIII: A new link in understanding thrombophilia.’

At the 7th Congress of Hematologists of Serbia (October 22 to 24, Vrnjačka Banja), I presented our research in an oral presentation entitled ‘Optimized Analysis of Whole Exome Sequencing Data for the Identification of Potential Genetic Determinants of Idiopathic Venous Thromboembolism.’

The congress also provided an excellent opportunity for our team to connect with leading hematologists from across Serbia, exchange ideas, and lay the groundwork for future research collaborations.

Another highlight was attending AI 4 LIFE: Biotech Future Forum 2026 in Belgrade, featuring inspiring talks on advances in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and medicine.

It was particularly exciting to attend the plenary lecture by Gregg L. Semenza, co-recipient of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.

His pioneering work on hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF 1) was especially interesting, as we are also investigating this pathway in the context of thrombophilia.

Finally, I had the pleasure of attending the 8th Congress of Transfusion Medicine of Serbia, where the hemostasis session offered valuable insights, particularly through excellent lectures on antithrombin deficiency.

A rewarding month of scientific discussions, new perspectives, and connections between molecular research and clinical practice!”
