Michael Wilkinson: A Hidden Cardiovascular Risk in Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases
Michael Wilkinson, Associate Professor of Medicine at UC San Diego Health, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in JACC: Advances, adding:
“Excited to share our new study in JACC: Advances.
‘Elevated Lipoprotein(a) Is Highly Prevalent in Autoimmune or Inflammatory Disease.’
In this multisite analysis of 49,431 patients across 5 University of California health systems, we found that elevated Lp(a) was more common among patients with autoimmune or inflammatory diseases (AIIDs) vs controls.
After adjustment, AIIDs were associated with 22% higher odds of Lp(a) more than 50 mg/dL (OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.15-1.29; p less than 0.001).
The prevalence of elevated Lp(a) in AIIDs approached that seen in patients with established ASCVD.
There is a complex interplay between inflammation and Lp(a).
Additional research is needed to better understand whether concomitant inflammation plus Lp(a) elevation creates a particularly high risk situation for ASCVD in patients with AIIDs.
