Deepalekha Banerjee: Vitamin Deficiency is a Bigger Problem than We Think
Deepalekha Banerjee, Founder and Chief Nutritionist of 360 Degree Nutricare, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Half the world is quietly running on empty – and most of us don’t even know it.
I started digging into global vitamin deficiency data recently, and honestly, the numbers stopped me in my tracks.
The scale of the problem:
- Over 1 billion people worldwide are estimated to be vitamin D deficient, and more than 50% of the global population has insufficient vitamin D levels. In Europe alone, deficiency rates run close to 40%.
- Anemia – largely driven by iron and B-vitamin gaps – affected nearly 2 billion people in 2021. Dietary iron deficiency alone accounted for 66.2% of all anemia cases, hitting 825 million women and 444 million men globally.
- Vitamin A deficiency is still a leading cause of preventable blindness in children and raises the risk of dying from common infections. India alone reported over 112 million cases in the latest global burden data.
- Using updated 2024 WHO hemoglobin standards, anemia prevalence among children aged 6–59 months came in at 61.4% across 48 countries studied – a sobering number for something so preventable.
The pattern is clear: this isn’t a ‘developing world’ problem or a ‘one demographic’ problem. It’s everywhere – from desk-bound professionals who never see sunlight, to new mothers, to people quietly cutting food groups without realizing what they’re cutting out.
The good news?
Most of this is reversible through food, sunlight, and awareness – not necessarily supplements.
Swipe through the poster below for a quick breakdown of which vitamin deficiency causes which disease, the symptoms to watch for, and exactly what to eat to reverse it.
If you’ve ever gotten bloodwork back and been surprised by a ‘low’ vitamin D or B12 flag – you’re far from alone. Save this, share it with someone who needs the reminder, and let’s normalize actually reading our lab reports.
What’s one food you added to your diet after finding out you were deficient in something?”
