Rahul Bhargava: Breaking Myths About Bone Marrow Transplant
Rahul Bhargava, Director and Head of Hematology, Hematoncology and Stem Cell Transplant at Fortis Health Care, posted on LinkedIn:
“Bone Marrow Transplant is NOT a Surgery
Let us finally break this myth.
Every time I tell a family that their loved one needs a Bone Marrow Transplant, I can see the fear immediately.
They imagine an operation theatre.
They imagine cuts, stitches, anesthesia.
They imagine danger.
But here is the truth.
Bone Marrow Transplant is NOT a surgery.
There is no cutting.
There is no organ removal.
There are no stitches.
It is a stem cell transfusion given through a vein, just like blood.
The patient receives healthy stem cells through an IV line.
That is the transplant.
And what about the donor?
In most modern transplants, stem cells are collected from the blood, very similar to a prolonged blood donation.
The donor is awake.
The donor is safe.
The donor goes home the same or the next day.
No major surgery.
No permanent harm.
So why does confusion continue?
Sometimes social media visuals show blue scrubs and dramatic settings.
But medicine is science, not cinema.
Let us be clear.
Transplant is a transfusion.
Science, not surgery.
Healing, not cutting
In India, fear often delays treatment.
And delay can cost lives.
It is time we change the narrative.
Because fear should never stand between a patient and a cure.”
