When sleep, light exposure, eating, and activity patterns fall out of rhythm, the body’s finely tuned systems lose synchronization.
- The brain’s “master clock” in the hypothalamus aligns daily cycles of metabolism, blood pressure, and hormone release
- Disruption from shift work, late-night light, irregular meals, or poor sleep desynchronizes these rhythms
- This misalignment leads to insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and higher risk for obesity, hypertension, and heart disease
Reestablishing alignment involves timed exposure to light, consistent sleep and meal schedules, and regular exercise. Morning light, early-day activity, and minimizing light at night help restore the body’s natural timing.
