Wolfgang Miesbach Honors Glenn Pierce for His Insights into Hemophilia Care at BIC 2025
Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
”The future isn’t just about new technologies – it’s about equitable distribution of life-changing treatments worldwide.
Glenn Pierce, VP Medical at WFH delivered a powerful presentation at BIC 2025 that perfectly captures both the achievements and the challenges in haemophilia care.
The remarkable progress so far:
- Innovation is advancing toward a haemophilia-free mind
- Increasing proportion of patients achieving zero bleeds
- Decreased treatment burden and improved quality of life
- Better short and long-term outcomes (though still proving some benefits)
But the reality of global inequity persists:
– High-income countries (16% of population) consume 50% of FVIII products
– Low-income countries (9% of population) access only 0.4% of products
– Lower-middle-income countries (58% of population) use just 7% of available treatments
Looking ahead: The treatment innovation cycle shows promise with gene therapy, extended half-life products, and new technologies positioned at different income levels. Yet we still need concentrated global effort to address unmet needs for the majority of the world’s haemophilia population.”
