WSO: United Nations Has Formally Adopted the Political Declaration on NCDs and Mental Health

”A major step forward for global health
We are delighted to share that the United Nations has formally adopted the Political Declaration on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and Mental Health.
Achieving global consensus is never easy, and this Declaration is a powerful signal that the international community is united in tackling one of the most urgent barriers to sustainable development: the growing burden of NCDs and mental health conditions.
By setting clear and ambitious targets for 2030, countries have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting people’s health from the world’s deadliest and most prevalent conditions — including stroke.
The Declaration includes important commitments such as:
- New fast-track and tracer targets
- Strengthened support for the health workforce
- Recognition of the critical role of people living with NCDs in shaping effective responses
Notably, for the stroke community the three global fast-track outcome targets aim to:
- Achieve hypertension control for 150 million additional people
- Reduce the number of tobacco users by 150 million
- Ensure 150 million more people have access to mental health care through stronger policies, expanded primary care, affordable services, and improved surveillance
This marks a significant milestone for the NCD community and global efforts to reduce the overall NCD burden.
However, continued and strengthened advocacy will be essential to ensure that stroke remains a clear policy priority, as countries move from commitment to implementation.
