Carlos Jerjes-Sánchez: The High-Risk Pulmonary Embolism Phenotypes Present with Shock or in the Initial Phases
Carlos Jerjes-Sánchez, Director of Clinical Research at the Institute of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine (ICMV), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Integrating Pulmonary Embolism into the Third LATAM Cardiogenic Shock Symposium: Advancing Comprehensive Cardiovascular Care
Pulmonary embolism is the third leading cause of cardiovascular mortality worldwide. It is the leading cause of death during pregnancy, the second leading cause in patients with cancer, and the third leading cause of death in intensive trauma care units. The high-risk pulmonary embolism phenotypes (cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock, sustained hypotension) present with shock or in the initial phases
I had the honor of co-moderating the Pulmonary Embolism and Cardiogenic Shock module with Dr. Alejandro Ricalde during the Third LATAM Cardiogenic Shock Symposium in the Riviera Maya.
For the first time, the symposium included a dedicated session on PE as a cause of shock, reflecting the growing recognition of its clinical complexity and relevance in modern cardiovascular care.
Together with Drs. Sripal Bangalore, Gerardo Payró, and José Ramón Azpiri, we discussed key aspects of management, from thrombolytic therapy and interventional approaches to the evolving concept of normotensive shock.
The session also highlighted how PERT (Pulmonary Embolism Response Team) frameworks can integrate seamlessly within Shock Team and ECMO structures, creating a collaborative and evidence-driven environment for critical decision-making.
This module marks a turning point in shared learning: the understanding that shock is not a single entity, but rather a complex hemodynamic spectrum requiring integration, science, and teamwork.
The symposium reaffirms the commitment of TecSalud and the Institute of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine to continuing education and excellence in comprehensively managing cardiovascular shock.
I am deeply grateful with the organizers for the opportunity to share this experience with colleagues who are committed to redefining cardiovascular care across Latin America.”
