Andreas Linkermann: Decoding the Chain Reaction of Ferroptotic Cell Death

Andreas Linkermann, Chair – Department of Internal Medicine V – Nephrology at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Nature Cell Biology, adding:

”Publication alert – Nature Cell Biology –
Mechanisms underlying propagation of ferroptotic cell death

Cell death propagation by ferroptosis represents a dynamic feature of tissue damage which occurs in diseases such as strokes, heart attacks and episodes of acute kidney injury and kidney tubular necrosis.

Scientifically, it is a fascinating topic which we have been excited to study over the last decade.

In a first, together with the team of Derek Pratt, we (Francesca Maremonti and Nadja Leinung) review our current understanding of that process starting with the chemical reactions that underly intermolecular spreading of lipid peroxidation within biological membranes.

Such reactions, we propose, transfer the deadly from cell to cell to expand tissue damage in diseases.

We argue that it is of clinical importance to detect factors that shape the anti-ferroptotic frontline within tissues the resilience of which defines the speed of cell death propagation. Teams of Tom Vanden Berghe and Koen Augustyns have recently treated human transplants with ferroptosis inhibitors. It is out hope to transfer this knowledge to clinical applications in the near future.

We are greateful to the editors of nature cell biology, in particular Petra Gross, Zhe Wang and Christina Kary for providing this outstanding platform.”
