Arrigo Francesco Giuseppe Cicero: Diagnostic and Prognostic Perspectives of Glycocalyx Disruption in Pregnancy
Arrigo Francesco Giuseppe Cicero, Head and Associate Professor of Human Nutrition at Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna and President at SiNut Official, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleges co-authored, adding:
“I’m pleased to share our latest publication in Inflammation Research:
‘Biomarkers of endothelial glycocalyx dysfunction in pregnancy: a systematic review of clinical relevance and detection techniques’
In this work, we explored the role of the endothelial glycocalyx as a key regulator of vascular homeostasis and its involvement in pregnancy-related complications such as preeclampsia.
Key insights:
- Glycocalyx disruption is consistently associated with adverse maternal–fetal outcomes
- Circulating biomarkers (e.g., syndecan-1, hyaluronic acid, heparan sulfate) may serve as indicators of endothelial injury
- Emerging imaging techniques could support early detection and risk stratification
These findings highlight the potential of integrating glycocalyx-related biomarkers into clinical practice, opening new perspectives for cardio-obstetric care.”
