Ayman Elbadawi: Why Does Stent Thrombosis Still Occur? Insights from the NCDR Data

Ayman Elbadawi, Structural Interventional Cardiologist at The University of Texas Medical Branch, shared on LinkedIn, about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

”How often are we still performing PCI for Stent Thrombosis in contemporary practice?

In our analysis published in JACC using contemporary NCDR data, we examined national trends in PCI performed for Stent Thrombosis (ST).

Key findings:

  • 2.8% of all PCI for AMI were performed for ST
  • No temporal decline in PCI for ST over time
  • Most ST events occurred early or very late after stent implantation

Despite major advances in stent technology and antiplatelet therapy, stent thrombosis remains a persistent clinical challenge.

Importantly, PCI performed for ST was associated with higher rates of in-hospital adverse outcomes, highlighting the high-risk nature of these presentations.

Would be interested to hear how others are approaching ST management in contemporary practice.”
