Our article explores the management of older adults with multiple long term conditions (MLTCs) -focusing on the link between heart failure and loneliness
When we were thinking about what conditions we could focus on in this article, we noticed that heart failure and depression were the most commonly recorded conditions in older patients I saw in my speciality registrar logbook. This prompted a closer look at how these experiences intersect in practice.
Loneliness is a related but distinct experience that can often sit alongside, or underpin mental health presentations.
Loneliness can worsen physical health, while chronic conditions can increase social isolation – and both have important implications for oral health.
The paper highlights the need for a holistic, patient-centred approach, considering not just medical status, but communication, capacity, and the wider social context.
