Christian Irsara: PF4 Immunothrombosis Following Natural Adenovirus Infection
Christian Irsara, pecialist in Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“We report a rare but serious case of thrombocytopenia and blood clots following a natural adenovirus infection (PF4 immunothrombosis VITT).
Fortunately, thanks to early diagnosis and prompt treatment, the young patient made a good recovery.
This work was made possible through the close collaboration between our team at the Central Institute of Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics (ZIMCL), the Departments of Pediatrics and Virology at the Medical University of Innsbruck, and our scientific partners in Greifswald, Essen, and Adelaide.
Together, we were the first to isolate, fully sequence, and characterize the specific adenovirus involved, as well as the associated serologic immune response.
These findings provide further insights into how this autoimmune reaction can develop and may help inform the design of safer adenovirus based vaccines and gene therapies in the future.
