Francesco Favruzzo: Can Mechanical Thrombectomy Be Safely Used in Cervical Artery Dissection?
Francesco Favruzzo, Neurology Consultant at Comprehensive Stroke Center – Ospedale dell’Angelo, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in European Journal of Neurology, adding:
“Can mechanical thrombectomy be used safely in patients with cervical artery dissection and large-vessel occlusion?
In our multicenter study across nine Italian stroke centers, we compared 164 patients with cervical artery dissection with matched patients undergoing thrombectomy for other stroke causes.
Despite more tandem occlusions and more complex procedures—including more frequent stenting and peri-procedural medication use-recanalization rates, safety profiles, and 90-day functional independence were comparable. Mortality at 90 days was lower in the dissection group.
Our findings, supported by a meta-analysis, reinforce the role of thrombectomy as a valuable treatment option also in this challenging stroke population.”
