Heghine Khachatryan: More Granular Risk Stratification Framework for PE from The New 2026 AHA/ACC Guideline
Heghine Khachatryan, Editor-in-Chief of Hemostasis Today, Head of Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center, reposted from Inari Medical and American Heart Association on LinkedIn, adding:
”New 2026 AHA/ACC Guideline on Acute Pulmonary Embolism
The 2026 AHA/ACC/ACCP/ACEP/CHEST/SCAI/SHM/SIR/SVM/SVN Guideline for the Evaluation and Management of Acute Pulmonary Embolism in Adults has been officially released in Circulation.
This comprehensive document introduces a new clinical classification scheme — ‘Acute Pulmonary Embolism Clinical Categories (A–E)’, providing a more granular risk stratification framework that ranges from low-risk to high-risk PE, including subcategories.
Key highlights:
- Multidisciplinary consensus across major cardiovascular, pulmonary, emergency, and vascular societies
- Updated recommendations on diagnostic algorithms
- Refined risk stratification criteria
- Contemporary guidance on anticoagulation, thrombolysis, catheter-directed therapy, and surgical intervention
- Emphasis on team-based care and PE response systems
This guideline represents a significant evolution in the standardized management of acute PE and will directly influence clinical decision-making, hospital protocols, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
As clinicians involved in thrombosis and hemostasis care, staying aligned with these updated recommendations is essential for optimizing patient outcomes.
Looking forward to reviewing the full document in detail and discussing its implications for practice.”
Inari Medical reposted from American Heart Association on LinkedIn:
”Today, the American Heart Association released their first ground-breaking guidelines for evaluating and managing acute Pulmonary Embolism in adults.
This achievement represents an incredible effort by a multidisciplinary team working to push the field forward.
These guidelines will enhance clinical decision-making, strengthen care pathways, and support the lifesaving work being done for PE patients every day.”
Quoting American Heart Association‘s post:
”This guideline introduces a new clinical classification scheme, entitled ‘Acute Pulmonary Embolism Clinical Categories,’ with 5 categories (A-E) and subcategories, ranging from low to high risk for adverse outcomes, in order to enhance the precision of severity classification, prognosis assessment, and evidence-based therapeutic decision-making for patients presenting with acute pulmonary embolism.”
